The Creative Process

As an artist and a photographer I have always been interested intensely in the creative process. I love both painting and photography and I spend my time in both mediums.

The love for photography came first, shooting initially in film and now converting totally to digital. Depending on the subject and message, I will develop either black and white or color images printing with pigment ink on resin or fiber paper. I utilize Canon camera bodies, which includes full sensor capabilities, along with high end L series lenses. I specialize in fine art, nature and industrial subject matter.

I paint primarily in watercolor and/or gouache on a variety of papers and substrates. I am fascinated by the transparent nature of watercolor and the ability to mix the colors on the paper or substrate.

Recently, I have combined both of my favorite mediums, black and white photography and watercolor. I now create a mixed media painting which starts with a carefully planned and developed black and white photograph printed on 140 lb. watercolor paper. The image is then painted with transparent watercolors allowing the message in the image to be further emphasized through specific areas of color.

Letter from Jeff Mayfield

Welcome to my web site. Artist and photographers have special and unique talents. Their vision of the world is a gift and the images they produce express this gift in a visual form. I hope you enjoy my work and perhaps my work will speak to you.

My images are carefully planned; drawn or photographed; and painted or developed. This process is time consuming and expensive. I ask that you respect my investment of time and money.
